APT about MultiLink PPP . . .
What is MultiLink PPP?
MultiLink PPP is a method of doubling your connect rates using your present analog telephone system! By using MultiLink PPP, along with two regular 56K modems and two regular telephone lines, you can double your download and upload rates. Your Windows95/98/NT software already handles the work involved in splitting the data between your two simultaneous connections.
What hardware do I need?
You need only have two modems, two telephone lines and the upgraded Dialup Networking software from MicroSoft. Click here to download the Windows95 upgrade now! Since the actual software that handles the splitting of the data is in your Dialup Networking software already, you need nothing else.
What does APT.net do to allow me to call in twice and use the MlinkPPP connectivity?
Since we do not currently allow multiple simultaneous logins, we create a special MultiLink PPP account for you which allows you to connect twice and therefore take advantage of the special features and rates of this protocol.
Why can't I just get two dialup accounts at the normal cost; and dial in with both modems?
We do not allow multiple simultaneous logins by the same UserID. In addition, we must configure your account so that when you dial in, your two(or more) connections can bond forming the one high-speed connection so that you may attain the faster data through-put that MultiLink PPP offers. By merely dialing in with two accounts using two different userID's, you would only realize two 56K connections.
Do I need to install another telephone line in my home or office?
This depends on your needs and what you currently have. You definitely need one phone line per modem. If you are currently using a dedicated data line for your InterNET needs, and also have a normal voice line, you may want to use the normal voice line as your second modem line. If you don't want to miss your incoming calls, the MultiLink PPP can be configured so that your voice line connection can be dropped when an incoming call is detected and then you can accept your call. Once your are finished, your voice line can then recall APT and reconnect at the faster rate.
Or you can simply install another line(s) to have a total of two(or more) dedicated data lines. MulitLink PPP can handle as many simultaneous bonded connections as you wish to install modems and telephone lines. Your data through-put is increased exponentially. If you have three modems and lines, your data rates will triple. With four, they will quadruple, and so on . . .
How reliable is this MultiLink PPP system?
We at APT.net are currently testing this entire area and will be releasing our results to you soon! Keep watch here and when we have concluded our tests we will release the findings here! By all we have read from industry publications, the system is very stable.
Where can I get a dual-modem and how can I get up and running at a possible 112K connect rate?
You can purchase a dual modem(two modems - one card) via any of your normal computer parts dealers or we offer a complete MultiLink PPP package for sale to our members. Please call our offices for more info regarding our special offer to our members. You can download the upgraded Windows95/98 Dialup Networking software here! Once you have everything installed and configured, give us a call and we will configure your account for MultiLink PPP and you will be all set!
Remember, you do not necessarily need a dual-modem. Two 56K modems will work the same. Dual modems are preferred in that they require only one slot or one serial port as opposed to using two slots or installing a multiport serial card for additional serial ports. A dual modem certainly makes for a more efficient and less costly method of upgrading to the higher speeds.
What are the advantages of MultiLink PPP vs ISDN?
ISDN is an extremely costly venture compared to MultiLink PPP. ISDN requires a special ISDN modem, approx. $400 - $500. ISDN requires a high-speed data line installed at a high cost by the telephone company. The monthly charges for a data line by the telephone company are well over $100 per month. Your APT.net internet access charge for dialup ISDN is $50 monthly.
Comparing all these costs with your startup costs of MultiLink PPP, as outlined above, shows that ISDN does not stand up as a cost-effective method of high-speed data transfer & connectivity on a byte per dollar ratio. We believe the minor speed increase that ISDN may provide does not justify the greatly increased expense of ISDN connectivity. When using a 64K ISDN connection, a MultiLink PPP connection is actually considerably faster and CONSIDERABLY cheaper!
